We are VariLeg

VISION.

We want to develop an exoskeleton which makes human walking accessible to paraplegics and thus restore their ability to move more freely.

It is of great importance to us to develop a device fit for daily use in the life of a paraplegic.  Our goal is to achieve this by implementing the novel idea of adjustable softness in the knee and therefore to be the first exoskeleton which does not struggle on uneven terrain and can mimic the natural behavior of the knee during gait more accurately.

After the successful participation at the Cybathlon in October 2016, the device will now be further developed for research purposes in order to investigate the advantages of the adjustable softness in the knee joint.

MOTIVATION.

It is our belief that every person has the right of walking, climbing stairs and communicating at eye level with their peers. However, this is often taken for granted, leaving people who are without the before mentioned abilities at a great disadvantage in their daily lives.

It is a great desire of ours to return some of these capabilities to facilitate their lives.

STRUCTURE.

The VariLeg exoskeleton was developed by two consecutive Focus Projects by students of the ETH Zurich. The Focus Project offers students in their final year of undergraduate studies the unique opportunity to experience the development process of a product in an interdisciplinary team.

Additional know-how that was necessary for the project, had to be acquired through self-studies as well as courses, parallel to the Focus Project. Information exchange with experts from the industry played a key role in this process as they allow a practical insight.

Further development will be achieved by supervised student projects, as well as voluntary work from freelancers and associated recent teammembers.

Features

Cybathlon

The first Cybathlon took place in Zurich at the 8th October in 2016 and will be repeated in 2020. It is a championship for physically disabled athletes, who use advanced assistive devices including robotic technologies. The competition comprises different disciplines that apply arm prosthetics, powered exoskeletons, powered wheelchairs etc. The assistive devices can either be commercially available or prototypes developed by research teams.
